Connect Bing Webmaster Tools to Fondoo

Live5 min readUpdated

This connects your own Bing Webmaster Tools account to Fondoo with your Bing API key. Your AI agent can then add and verify sites, submit sitemaps and URLs to Bing, and check how much URL quota you have left.

What Fondoo can do with it

Actions run through connector_action({connectionId, action, input}):

ActionRiskWhat it does
sites.listreadLists sites in your account, whether each is verified, and its public msvalidate.01 code.
sites.addwriteAdds an HTTPS site (siteUrl) so it can be verified.
sites.verifywriteAsks Bing to check ownership. The tag, BingSiteAuth.xml file or DNS record must already be live.
sitemaps.listreadLists the sitemaps and feeds Bing knows for a site.
sitemaps.submitwriteSubmits a sitemap (feedUrl) on the same host. Sitemap, RSS 2.0, Atom or text.
urls.submitwriteSubmits one url for crawling. Uses quota.
urls.submit_batchwriteSubmits 1 to 500 URLs (urlList) on the same host. Uses quota.
quota.getreadReads remaining daily and monthly URL quota.

Fondoo cannot remove sites or change crawl settings. No action needs owner approval. Agents need search:read for reads and search:write for writes. Deleting the connection needs owner approval.

How this differs from bing. The bing integration uses the Fondoo operator's keys: it pings IndexNow and submits your sitemap automatically on every publish, and you paste nothing. bing_webmaster uses your own Bing account, works for any HTTPS site you manage (including sites not hosted on Fondoo) and adds URL submission and quota checks. Because IndexNow already runs on publish, manual URL submission is rarely needed.

Before you start

  • A free Bing Webmaster Tools account. Sign in with a Microsoft, Google or Facebook account (Microsoft).
  • At least one site added to your Bing account. Verification can come later, through Fondoo.
  • The site must use HTTPS.

Step by step: get your credentials

  1. Sign in at bing.com/webmasters.
  2. Click Settings (top right), then go to API Access.
  3. The first time, read and accept the terms.
  4. Click Generate API Key and copy it. Bing allows one key per user, and it works for every site you have verified (Microsoft). Bing does not use scopes; the key acts with your full Bing user access.
  5. Decide on the optional siteUrl, for example https://www.example.com. If you set it, every call from this connection is limited to that one site. This is safer when the key covers many sites.

Bing also offers OAuth. Fondoo uses the API key only.

Fondoo fieldRequiredValue
apiKeyyes (secret)Your Bing Webmaster API key. Letters and digits, 16 to 128 characters.
siteUrlnoOne HTTPS site URL to restrict this connection to.

The key format is not documented by Microsoft; their sample is 32 hexadecimal characters. This may differ for your account.

Connect it in Fondoo

a. In the dashboard. Go to Connections → Connect a tool, type "Bing" in Find a tool, and on the Bing webmaster card click Use a key. Click Open secure key entry, fill in apiKey (and siteUrl if you want it), then Save connection securely. The page expires after 15 minutes and works once.

b. By asking your agent. Example prompt: "Give me a secure link to connect my Bing Webmaster API key, then add and verify https://www.example.com."

add_connection_key({provider: "bing_webmaster", siteId: "YOUR-SITE-ID"})

This returns a one-use securePasteUrl. Do not paste the key into chat. Passing fields directly works but leaves a warning that the key may remain in chat logs.

REST:

curl -X POST https://api.getfondoo.com/v1/ops/add_connection_key \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FONDOO_API_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"provider":"bing_webmaster","siteId":"YOUR-SITE-ID"}'

Verify a Fondoo-hosted site. Bing's API cannot place the tag for you, so:

  1. connector_action({connectionId, action: "sites.add", input: {siteUrl: "https://www.example.com"}})
  2. connector_action({connectionId, action: "sites.list", input: {}}) and copy the site's verificationCode.
  3. configure_site_pixels({siteId, bing: {verification: "<code>"}}), then publish.
  4. connector_action({connectionId, action: "sites.verify", input: {siteUrl: "https://www.example.com"}}). Expect verified: true.

For a site Fondoo does not host, put the msvalidate.01 tag, BingSiteAuth.xml file or DNS record on it yourself before step 4.

Test that it works

  1. Run test_connection({connectionId}). Fondoo calls sites.list.
    • connected: the key works. sites.list is confirmed and the other actions are listed as unknown, not granted.
    • limited: the key works, but the siteUrl you set is not a verified site yet.
    • invalid: the key was rejected.
  2. Run quota.get for your site to see daily and monthly URL quota.
  3. Run sitemaps.list to confirm Bing has your sitemap.

Troubleshooting

  • Test shows invalid: Bing returns HTTP 400 with InvalidApiKey for a bad key (Microsoft). Copy the key again, or check it was not deleted and regenerated.
  • "Credential fields do not match the connector manifest": the key contains spaces or symbols, or siteUrl is not an HTTPS URL.
  • "This connection is restricted to its configured siteUrl": you set siteUrl and called another site. Use that site or make a second connection.
  • "url must be on the same host as siteUrl": sitemaps and URLs must be on the site's exact host (www counts).
  • sites.verify returns verified: false: the tag is not live yet. Publish after configure_site_pixels, check the page source, then retry.
  • "urlList must contain 1-500 URLs": split larger lists. Check quota.get before large batches.

Limits, data and security

  • Microsoft documents no request rate. Fondoo budgets 30 requests per minute for this connector.
  • URL submissions use a per-site daily and monthly quota; read it with quota.get. Bing's help describes a daily per-domain URL quota and recommends IndexNow for most sites (Bing help).
  • Fondoo calls Bing's JSON API (ssl.bing.com/webmaster/api.svc/json). Microsoft set 31 August 2026 as the retirement date for the older SOAP and POX formats; Fondoo does not use them (Microsoft).
  • Bing requires the key in the URL query string. Fondoo adds it only inside the connector and does not include URLs in error messages.
  • The key is encrypted in Fondoo's connector vault. list_connections shows only a masked value. A rotation reminder is due after 90 days unless you set rotateAfter.
  • To rotate: in Bing's API Access page delete the key and generate a new one (the old key stops working at once), then run rotate_connection_key({connectionId}) and paste the new key.
  • To disconnect, run delete_connection({connectionId}) (owner approval). It does not delete the key at Bing.
  • No webhooks are used.
