Connect Bing to Fondoo

Live4 min readUpdated

The bing integration is Fondoo's built-in way of telling Bing and other IndexNow search engines about your pages. It runs on keys that the Fondoo operator manages, so you have no API key to paste. Your part is to prove you own the site in Bing Webmaster Tools if you want to see Bing's reports.

If you want your own Bing Webmaster account connected (to add sites, submit URLs and read quota), see the separate bing_webmaster guide.

What Fondoo can do with it

All of this is automatic on Fondoo-hosted sites, after the operator turns it on:

  • IndexNow on every publish. Each site gets a random 32-character IndexNow key. Fondoo's edge serves it at https://<your-domain>/<key>.txt. After each publish_site or deploy_static, Fondoo sends the changed and removed page URLs to https://api.indexnow.org/indexnow. Submissions are shared with all participating search engines, including Bing (IndexNow).
  • Bing sitemap submission on every publish. Fondoo submits https://<your-domain>/sitemap.xml to Bing Webmaster with the operator's Bing API key.
  • bing_submit does that sitemap submission on demand (risk: write, scope search:write). It takes only siteId and returns {submitted: true}.
  • Bing ownership tag. configure_site_pixels with bing: {verification} adds <meta name="msvalidate.01" content="..."> to your pages on the next publish, so you can verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools.

None of these need owner approval. Fondoo never sees or stores a Bing credential of yours for this integration.

On hosted Fondoo, check what is switched on with get_search_connection_status: it returns indexNowConfigured and bingConfigured.

Before you start

  • A site published on Fondoo. External sites (connectedUrl) are not pinged, and Fondoo cannot add tags to them.
  • Optional: a free Bing Webmaster Tools account. You can sign in with a Microsoft, Google or Facebook account (Microsoft).
  • IndexNow and Bing Webmaster Tools have no fee.

Step by step: get your credentials

There is no credential for you to create. To verify ownership in Bing Webmaster Tools:

  1. Sign in at bing.com/webmasters.
  2. Add your site. Bing also offers an import from Google Search Console (Bing help).
  3. Choose the HTML Meta Tag method. Bing shows a tag like <meta name="msvalidate.01" content="your-indexnow-key">.
  4. Copy only the content value. Fondoo accepts exactly 32 hexadecimal characters.
  5. Save it in Fondoo (next section), then publish.
  6. Back in Bing Webmaster Tools, click Verify. Keep the tag in place.

Use the exact address your site is served on (https, with or without www). A mismatch is the most common reason verification fails.

Self-hosters (operator setup): set INDEXNOW_ENABLED=true to send IndexNow pings. Set BING_API_KEY to a Bing Webmaster API key from Settings → API Access → Generate API Key (Microsoft). That key belongs to one Bing user, so sitemap submits only succeed for sites that user has verified.

Connect it in Fondoo

a. In the dashboard. Bing has no card on the Connections page, and there is no dashboard field for the verification code. Use your agent or REST.

b. By asking your agent. Example prompt: "Add my Bing verification code your-indexnow-key to my site, publish, and then submit my sitemap to Bing."

configure_site_pixels({siteId: "YOUR-SITE-ID", bing: {verification: "your-indexnow-key"}})
publish_site({siteId: "YOUR-SITE-ID"})
bing_submit({siteId: "YOUR-SITE-ID"})

connect_service({provider: "bing", siteId}) returns a signed 15-minute link with the same instructions. It takes no credentials.

REST:

curl -X POST https://api.getfondoo.com/v1/ops/configure_site_pixels \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FONDOO_API_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"siteId":"YOUR-SITE-ID","bing":{"verification":"your-indexnow-key"}}'

curl -X POST https://api.getfondoo.com/v1/ops/bing_submit \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $FONDOO_API_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"siteId":"YOUR-SITE-ID"}'

Add "dryRun": true to preview either call.

Test that it works

  1. get_search_connection_status({siteId}): check indexNowConfigured and bingConfigured.
  2. get_site_pixels({siteId}) shows the exact tag that will be injected.
  3. After publishing, view your page source and look for msvalidate.01.
  4. In Bing Webmaster Tools, the site shows as verified and the sitemap appears under Sitemaps.

Troubleshooting

  • "Bing is not configured" from bing_submit: the operator has not set BING_API_KEY. IndexNow can still work without it.
  • Verification code rejected by Fondoo: paste only the 32-character content value, not the whole tag.
  • Bing cannot find the tag: publish after saving the code, and verify the exact https host Fondoo serves. Clear any CDN cache in front of the site.
  • bing_submit fails (the error may read "Google API request failed (400)", because Fondoo reuses one HTTP helper): Bing returns 400 when the operator's Bing account has not verified your site, or the key is invalid (Microsoft). Connect your own bing_webmaster key instead.
  • Publish fails after a provider error: Fondoo rolls the publish back. Retry; repeated pings are safe.

Limits, data and security

  • IndexNow accepts up to 10,000 URLs per request and may return 429 for too many requests (IndexNow). Fondoo only sends URLs that changed in a publish.
  • Neither submission guarantees crawling or indexing.
  • Fondoo stores the IndexNow key with your site. It is public by design, and no operation lists it. The Bing verification code is also public.
  • To remove the tag, call configure_site_pixels({siteId, bing: null}) and publish. There is nothing to rotate on your side.
  • No webhooks are used.
  • Not confirmed: whether hosted Fondoo has BING_API_KEY and IndexNow switched on for your site. Check the status operation, as this may differ for your account.
